Hyaluronic fillers are currently one of the most popular treatments in aesthetic medicine. This non-invasive procedure provides an instant rejuvenation and refreshing effect, filling wrinkles, defining facial contours, and adding volume to areas such as the lips or cheeks.

However, like most aesthetic procedures, swelling may occur after the treatment with hyaluronic fillers, which is a completely normal and temporary reaction.

Why Does Swelling Occur After Hyaluronic Filler Treatment?

Swelling after the application of hyaluronic fillers is a normal skin reaction to the injection of a foreign substance into the tissue. Hyaluronic fillers are applied using a fine needle or a cannula, which causes microtrauma to the skin, minimal tissue damage, and a mild inflammatory response. This reaction manifests as mild to moderate swelling and is part of the body’s natural healing and tissue adaptation process.

Additionally, hyaluronic acid has the ability to bind water, which may contribute to more noticeable swelling during the first few days after treatment, especially in sensitive areas like the lips and cheekbones.

How Long Does the Swelling Usually Last?

In most cases, the swelling is mild and short-lived. It is most noticeable during the first 24 to 48 hours after the treatment and then gradually begins to subside. Typically, the swelling fully disappears within 3 to 5 days. For treatments in more sensitive areas such as the lips, the swelling may last up to seven days due to increased blood flow and the natural sensitivity of that area.

It’s important not to assess the final results immediately after the procedure, as the true effect becomes visible only once the swelling has completely gone down—usually between 7 and 14 days.

Factors That Influence the Duration of Swelling

Several factors can influence the duration and intensity of swelling. The area of injection plays a key role—sensitive regions like the lips or under-eye area tend to swell more and for longer. The amount of filler used is also significant, as larger quantities put more pressure on the tissue and typically cause more swelling.

Individual characteristics of the patient, such as skin type and a tendency to retain fluid, affect how the body reacts to the treatment. The injection technique is another crucial factor—precise and professional application can significantly reduce the risk of swelling and bruising.

Finally, the composition and formula of the filler can also have an impact. Different products vary in consistency, molecular weight, and water-binding properties, which can affect the degree of swelling.

How to Reduce Swelling After Hyaluronic Fillers

Cold compresses
Applying cold compresses or ice packs wrapped in a clean cloth helps reduce inflammation and discomfort. It is recommended to apply cold compresses for 10-minute intervals every hour during the first 24 hours after the procedure.

Keeping the head elevated
Keep your head elevated while sleeping (using extra pillows). This supports lymphatic drainage, prevents fluid accumulation, and reduces swelling.

Avoiding intense physical activity
For the first few days, avoid physical activities that may increase blood and lymph circulation, as this can worsen swelling. Saunas, hot baths, or exposure to extreme heat should also be avoided for several days.

Hydration and avoiding alcohol and salt
Adequate water intake helps speed up the elimination of excess fluids, while reducing salt intake helps prevent additional water retention in the tissues. Alcohol can further dehydrate the skin and worsen swelling.

Medications and supplements
Avoid medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as supplements that may increase the risk of bleeding and swelling. Talk to your doctor about safe alternatives for managing pain.
