Benefits of endovenous laser ablation
This treatment provides numerous benefits:
- An aesthetic improvement in the appearance of the legs.
- A minimally invasive procedure.
- A significant reduction in pain and discomfort.
- Improved blood circulation.
- A reduced risk of venous ulcers.
How is the procedure performed?
The laser energy damages and shrinks the affected veins, which then gradually disappear. The procedure is performed under tumescent anaesthesia, which protects the surrounding tissue and reduces pain. The surgeon precisely tracks the laser fibre with ultrasound while destroying the affected vein. After the procedure, the veins become fibrous and stop carrying blood.
Is removing veins a problem?
No. The superficial veins that are removed are already non-functional and often a source of thrombosis and inflammation. Removing them significantly reduces the risk of serious complications. Healthy veins take over the job of returning blood to the heart.
Recovery after EVLA
Recovery is quick, with minimal scarring and pain. Patients are often mobile immediately and are encouraged to take light walks. Bruising and mild pain are treated with painkillers and creams. A check-up is carried out after seven days, with further advice.
Risks and complications
Although EVLA is safe, possible complications include:
- Mild numbness of the skin (up to 7 days).
- Inflammation of the treated vein (3–7 days).
- Deep vein thrombosis (very rare).
- Minor infections or bruising.
Costs and availability
The price of the procedure includes post-operative check-ups during the first year, but the costs are not covered by general health insurance. Supplementary insurance may partly cover the costs, depending on the insurer.
EVLA is a safe, modern and effective way of solving the problem of varicose veins, with minimal risks and a quick recovery.
