Gynecomastia (male breast surgery)

Male breasts can become significantly enlarged, which can be a serious aesthetic and psychological problem. Enlarged male breasts can have two causes: an accumulation of fatty tissue or an enlargement of glandular tissue (elevated levels of the female hormone oestrogen).

Methods

When treating male breasts that are enlarged because of fatty tissue, gynecomastia is most often treated with methods such as laser liposuction or classic liposuction. These methods allow the precise removal of excess fat, reducing the volume of the breasts and giving the chest a more harmonious appearance. Laser liposuction uses laser energy to target and melt fat cells, which makes them easier to remove while also tightening the skin. Classic liposuction, on the other hand, involves the mechanical removal of fat deposits with a cannula, achieving a similar result.

Where enlarged glands are present in addition to fatty tissue, a combined procedure is performed that includes both liposuction and the surgical removal of glandular tissue. This is necessary to achieve an optimal aesthetic result, because liposuction alone would not reduce the breasts to the desired size. The glandular tissue is removed carefully, to preserve the function of the surrounding tissue and minimise possible complications.

Anaesthesia

Gynecomastia surgery to reduce male breasts is most often performed under general anaesthesia, which means that the patient is completely unconscious and pain-free throughout the procedure. General anaesthesia allows the surgeon to perform all the necessary steps precisely and without interruption in order to achieve the desired aesthetic result, which in most cases is truly impressive and significantly improves the patient's appearance.

Before the operation, the patient must not eat or drink for at least six hours. This preparation is essential to reduce the risk of complications during anaesthesia and to ensure the patient's safety.

Recovery

Post-operative recovery after gynecomastia surgery is individual and can vary, but in most cases it takes between five and ten days. During this period patients may feel mild pain and discomfort, which is successfully controlled with prescribed painkillers. It is important to follow all of the doctor's instructions so that recovery is as fast as possible and free of complications.

One of the key aspects of post-operative recovery is wearing a special compression garment, which should be worn continuously for four weeks from the day of the procedure. This garment helps reduce swelling, supports the tissue during healing and helps achieve the desired shape of the chest.

The stitches are usually removed ten days after the operation, which is when most patients are ready to return to their everyday activities. However, it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activity and exertion for the first four weeks after surgery, so that the tissues can fully recover and achieve optimal results.
